The All-Ireland Fred Daly Champions 2008 - Rosslare G.C. The Fred Daly Trophy is a seven person team event (with two substitutes) under 18 matchplay competition, played off scratch, held in memory of Ireland’s first Open Champion. Fred Daly won the British Open in Hoylake and played Ryder Cup four times in 1947, ’49, ’51 and ’53. Rosslare qualified for the knockout stages with a best qualifying round in Enniscorthy on March 27th. Subsequent victories over Curragh 5-2 and South County 4-3 saw them qualify for the Leinster final which they won by beating Tullamore 4-3 in Killiney Golf Club on Monday July 28th. The team members Chris Drumm, Caolan Barron, Gary Collins, Ian Cuddihy, Conor Kelly, Tiarnan Rossiter, Ross Young and substitutes Mark Holohan and Eamon Kelly travelled with many supporters to Masserreene Golf Club in Antrim over the weekend of 23rd August. They took on and beat the Ulster Champions, City of Derry in the Semi-Finals by 4 ½ -2 ½ on Monday 25th August. Charleveille Golf Club defeated a very fancied Co. Sligo in the other semi final 4-3 to set up a Munster V Leinster final in the afternoon. The Rosslare lads played some wonderful golf with Chris Drumm winning 2 and 1, Gary Collins winning on the 21st and Tiarnan Rossiter and Ross Young both winning 3 and 2 to create another historic victory to follow on the All Ireland success of the Rosslare Jimmy Bruen team in 2005. This current victory in the most sought after competition in Junior golf in Ireland certainly shows that the hard work and effort put into the Junior section of Rosslare Golf Club over the past few years is now being richly rewarded.
